In Dubai, it is not allowed to drink while driving or to get behind the wheel under the influence. UAE legislation prohibits operating any vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Being caught driving under the influence may result in imprisonment for up to 6 months, deportation, a fine ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 AED, confiscation of the vehicle, and the accumulation of penalty points.
The UAE adopts a zero-tolerance policy towards alcohol, so tourists are not advised to consume alcoholic beverages even in a parked and turned-off car. Additionally, the police may inquire about transporting a large quantity of alcohol – it is advisable to limit the amount of alcohol and purchase drinks only from Duty-Free or licensed stores.
A similar situation applies to smoking. Smoking is discouraged in the car, and smoking in public places may result in fines imposed by the police. The fine for smoking in public places or littering is 200 AED.
