What happens if you don't pay fines in Dubai

In 2023, Dubai tightened its traffic regulations and some fines can now reach several thousand dirhams (the official currency of the UAE). For example, exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h will result in a fine of 3,000 dirhams (about $820). Tourists are therefore advised to familiarise themselves with all the peculiarities of the traffic in Dubai before their visit.

All traffic violations committed by a driver in a rented car are reported to the rental company. When renting a car, a certain amount is blocked on the driver’s credit card from which the payment of fines will be deducted. However, the information on fines on the Dubai Police website is not updated immediately, so the refund of the deposit can take up to 30 days after the car is returned, although the exact timeframe depends on the terms and conditions of the specific car rental company.

Due to delays in updating the Dubai Police database, tourists are often unaware of any fines they have incurred until they return home, when the payment is deducted from the blocked deposit amount. If the deposit is insufficient to pay the fines, or if the rental company receives information about violations after the deposit has been returned, the company may contact the renter and the bank to arrange payment.

The official deadline for paying fines in the UAE is 15 days from receipt of the notice. After this period, the offender will be added to the list of debtors and may be banned from entering Dubai or arrested on arrival until the situation is resolved. Tourists can check fines online at the official Dubai Police website and pay them remotely, even if they have already left the country.

In the event of a dispute over fines, it is advisable to keep all documents relating to the car rental and to contact the car rental company and the Dubai authorities immediately to resolve the matter.

To avoid violations and fines, tourists should be aware of the cultural peculiarities and rules of behaviour on Dubai’s roads. For example, drinking alcohol while driving, using a mobile phone without a hands-free kit, and parking in unauthorised areas are prohibited in the UAE. Knowing and obeying these rules will help make your trip to Dubai enjoyable and safe.
